This is an academic minor provided by the Department of Teacher Education. STEP prepares future subject teachers for their work in educational institutions, with an emphasis on teaching children and young people in secondary schools. The programme is designed in such a way that it can be completed in one academic year of full-time studies in Helsinki, or over a longer period with five interspaced modules abroad (and in Helsinki) as a made to order programme. STEP corresponds to the Finnish subject teacher education and gives an European Union qualification to work as a subject teacher in a subject that the participant has studied to at least BA-level before entering the programme.

In this course, participants will familiarize themselves with methods of ICT-assisted collaborative inquiry learning. The participants are introduced to a model called Progressive Inquiry, used widely in Finnish comprehensive schools. The method empowers students to be involved in advanced ways of working with knowledge as the essential element of learning activities. The method promotes students to formulate questions and explanations, to evaluate them critically and to apply literacy sources to build new understandings, meanings and knowledge together.

This course covers a new teaching method aimed at supporting children’s learning. Participants are introduced to the pedagogical strategy Playful Computer Writing.
